5 Famous Dogs from Television/Film/Cartoons and Their Real Life Counterparts

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

If I asked you to name some “famous dogs”, I bet the first ones to come to mind are fictitious dog we know from the media. Although their antics and heroics can sometimes seem like pure fiction, there are dogs in real life who have performed similar feats. These five examples show how special dogs really are.

Lassie and Flossie

Lassie is an icon of pop culture, appearing in books, radio, television and movies. The common theme was that Lassie, an extremely intelligent collie, was adept at helping her owners get out of trouble.

In the real world, there are many cases of dogs saving their owners and averting disaster. One famous example is Flossie, a stray Labrador/Chow mix that Drew Barrymore rescued from the streets of Los Angeles. In February 2001, Flossie woke up Barrymore and then – fiancé Tom Green at 3:30, saving them from a fire that burned down the home. When the house was rebuilt, Barrymore gave Flossie a new dog house – the $3 million mansion itself, in trust under Flossie’s name.

Benji and a Kenyan Stray Dog

Benji was another helpful dog, familiar to us from the silver screen. He was a lovable mutt who seemed to always sense when humans were in need. In the first Benji movie, the pup saves children from kidnappers.

A stray dog in Kenya saved a baby who had been left in the forest. The dog dragged the baby to a shed, where people discovered her snuggling with the puppies. The baby survived despite being alone for an estimated two days before the dog found her.

Shadow, Chance, and Guard

“The Incredible Journey” is the story of two dogs and a cat that travel across many miles to return to their owners. It began as a book by Sheila Burnford and was made into 2 movies by Disney. In the latest movie, the dogs were named Shadow (a Labrador Retriever) and Chance (an American Bulldog).

Guard was an Old English sheepdog. He disappeared from the home of Bernard Parks and family. Life went on and they moved 225 miles away. Guard was somehow able to find them again, 16 months later and 20 pounds lighter.

Tramp and Lady

In the movie Lady and the Tramp, Tramp, a scruffy mutt, redeems himself in everyone’s eyes by the end when he kills a rat that was trying to attack the baby of Lady’s owner.

A dog named Lady saved a mom and 4 children from being bitten by rattlesnakes, but not before being bitten herself.

Clifford the Big Red Dog and Bug

Clifford wasn’t always so big. He was born the runt of the litter, but his helpful dog grew to an astonishing 25 feet tall and was famous for helping the local fire brigade.

While Bug, another runt of the litter, certainly hasn’t grown as tall as Clifford, he certainly shared Clifford’s enormous heart. This Shih Tzu crossbreed saved the Lukowicz family from a fire.
