The Basics of Dog Ear Treatment

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Conditions that require dog ear treatment are among the most widespread reasons for medical attention in dogs. Ear infections usually show up as swelling and redness in the ear and are often accompanied by a discharge and odor. Outer ear infections are the easiest to cure and are caused by bacteria, yeast or ear mites. Middle ear infections are harder to get to and care for. Inner ear infections cause the most concern as they are capable of spreading to the central nervous system and in some cases become fatal. Because of this, dog owners should make efforts to prevent problems in the ears and seek prompt attention when problem do occur.

The need for dog ear treatment can be as simple as irritations brought on by foreign dirt or debris being trapped in the ear or by the buildup of excessive ear wax. Ear mites are very common and dog allergies can also result in ear issues. Dogs with floppy ears may experience bacterial or fungus infections due to excessive moisture from the lack of air flow through the ear.

Usually a dog ear treatment will begin with a careful flushing and cleaning of the ear to remove dirt, wax and foreign objects. A clean cloth should be used for cleansing the ear rather than cotton, as cotton can rub off leaving pieces in the ear. If moisture is present, the ears should be dried with the cloth.

Ear mites usually produce dark gritty debris similar to coffee grounds. If this is found, it should be removed from the ear. A veterinarian can describe the proper medication to further treat the condition and get rid of the mites. Problems with the ears from dog allergies may require a change in diet if it is from a food allergy or removal of the dog from certain environments if they are allergic to dust or mold. Bacterial and fungal infections will require drops or ointments suited to their particular purpose.

Most ear infections in dogs can be prevented. In order to avoid the need for future dog ear treatment, cleaning of the ears should become part of a regular hygiene routine. Dogs that swim will require more attention to keep the ears dry. If the ears have excess hair, it should be trimmed carefully to increase air flow.
