Is Your Dog Hogging Your Bed?
Many new dog owners are blinded by the excitement of having a puppy and allow the dog to sleep with them. While the dog is young, this is great, but as the dog gets older, it quickly gets old. If you are one of these dog owners, and you are tired of your dog hogging your bed, try retraining the dog to sleep on its own.
Your dog does not need to sleep with you to be comfortable. Trust me, there are top quality dog beds available that would make you jealous of your dog. There are dog beds that have layers of foam for maximum comfort without sacrificing orthopedic support. Since each layer of foam is a separate piece and therefore easy to wash. Many dog beds also come with a washable cover made of fleece, or other very soft materials. Some are convertible and come with a nylon cover that is comfortable in the summer and a fleece cover for the winter. There are even a few that have a layer of cedar to give extra support. Jealous yet?
If your dog sleeps with you because he or she just loves to cuddle with you try getting a comfortable dog bed and put something that smells like you in or near it. This will give the dog the sensation that you are near. Watch for the dog’s favorite places in the house. If he or she does not sleep in the bed right away move it to one of those places. Or slowly get he or she use to the idea of sleeping alone by setting the bed in your room, once the dog gets use to sleeping in the bed, move the dog bed somewhere else.
Retaining a dog to sleep in its own bed is not that difficult. If your dog does not like the idea, make the transition in steps. There are very nice top quality dog beds out there if you are concerned about your dog sleeping on the cold hard floor. You don’t have to sacrifice your own comfort forever.
