When concerned with a coughing dog, it would be wise to first check for symptoms of kennel cough. This highly contagious airborne disease is transferred between dogs in much the same way as the common cold is passed among humans. It is usually contracted when dogs find themselves in close quarters with infected animals or in places those animals have been recently.
Kennels, animal shelters, grooming facilities and animal hospitals all create situations that can spread the sickness. Once a dog is infected, symptoms will most likely appear within 3-10 days. Dogs that are not yet showing symptoms of kennel cough can still put other animals at risk.
Kennel cough is usually caused by a combination of both bacterial and viral infection of the upper respiratory system. The lining of the bronchi and trachea become inflamed and when air passes over them, it results in an irritating cough. Animals with a weakened defense system are most susceptible. Spending time in crowded or poorly ventilated areas such as kennels, exposure to cold temperatures, stressful situations and breathing in dust or smoke can all weaken the immune system.
Characteristic symptoms of kennel cough begin with a persistent and dry, hacking cough. Dogs will usually experience coughing fits that cause them to retch and gag while spitting up. The coughing may sound as if the dog is trying to cough up something that is stuck in their throat and they sometimes produce a white frothy substance. Eye discharge, sneezing and a runny nose may also be present. When the area over the dog’s trachea is pressed lightly, a cough will usually be forthcoming. Heavy exertion can set off coughing fits and night time may bring on more persistent episodes that can induce distress and sleeplessness for both the dog and owner.
Other than these indicators, dogs with mild symptoms of kennel cough typically appear to be in good health with little or no signs of fever or sluggishness. The appetite is usually not affected and the dog will continue with its normal activities. If more serious symptoms do occur, care should be taken to ensure the dog does not contract pneumonia.
