What to do When Your Dog is in Heat

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Female dog care is a bit different that male dog care is, primarily due to the female going into heat. This is the time when female dogs usually ovulate; they also bleed similar to a woman having a menstrual period. A female dog’s bleeding is not as heavy though.

The main way to care for your female in heat is to be certain that unwanted male dogs cannot get to her. If you want your female to breed, you want to be very selective at which dog you breed her with. This is especially true if your dog is a registered pedigree.

If she runs outside at all make sure she is in an enclosed fenced in area. You can walk her but on a leash. This will help you control the situation if she is approached by a male dog.

If your dog is a house dog then you may want to protect your carpet and floors from her getting blood on them. You can do this through special dog diapers made for this function. You can get them in several sizes to fit your dog correctly. You can buy either disposables or cotton washable ones. This way you won’t be constantly cleaning up after her. Again monitor how she can get out of the house too. The male dogs will not be far off.

Now you avoid all the hassle of your dog being in heat by having her spayed. If you are not going to breed her this is the best thing to do for the dog. She has a higher risk of developing cancer in her breasts if you don’t. Some people do have mixed feelings of doing though, so consult with your veterinarian for further information.
