Keep Your Dog Safe with a Good Dog Collar

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The worst fear of owning a dog is that they will get loose and get hurt or lost. A good collar with identification is a one of the many things you can do to protect your best friend. The collar should fit them and not come off their neck easily. By having tags they can be returned to you easier and are less likely to be assumed a stray.

How do you know what collars are best for your dog? For most dogs a basic nylon collar will do. Before buying, measure the neck size of your dog to make sure you purchase a collar that will fit. An adjustable collar is a very good buy because your dog will grow and need a bigger collar. The clasps should be strong and durable. It should have a place for identification tags and a durable connection spot for a leash. All other considerations are personal preference.

Walking with a collar may be difficult. Some owners also purchase a harness of some type to make exercise time easier on them and their pet. Collars often can cause the dog to choke if they lunge when walking. Harnesses prevent this. Smaller dogs often need a harness that goes around their body and larger breeds need one that goes around their mouth and neck. They prevent pulling and give you more control of your dog.

Harnesses are uncomfortable for your dog to wear all the time and sleep in. It should be an exercise tool for you. Dog collars are a great tool for keeping identification on your dog. Choose a good collar and keep it on your dog at all times. They will be used to it and it will not get in their way. Your dog will be protected and you will feel a little more secure knowing that they have the identification they need to be returned to you safely.
