The Best Way to Keep Your Greyhound Healthy

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The first dog I ever had when I was a kid was a Greyhound. I was living in Mobile, Alabama and one day, at about five years old, my mother took my sister and I to a Greyhound rescue. The next thing I know we’re on our way back home with a beautiful Greyhound named Maybelle – a retired racing Greyhound that had apparently won quite a lot of races, so we kept her professional name.

Maybelle and I would take lots of walks. There was a park down the street from us called Mims Park that hosted baseball games and football games. Nearly every evening I would take her down there and parade her around. Everybody would always walk up and say “She’s so cute” and Maybelle loved the attention (I felt cooler by association).

Greyhounds, contradictory to their sight-hound skills and reputation as professional racers, are incredibly lethargic. They’re couch potatoes. But, one thing that never changes is how fun they are to be around. So, in order to have as much time with your Greyhound as possible, it’s important to be aware of Greyhound dog health problems so that you can treat them and prevent them in order that you and your pet can have a long happy life together like I did with my dog Mayebelle.

The following are a few common Greyhound dog health problems:

- Thyroid Problems
- Bloating
- PRA
- Digestive Problems
- Bleeding Disorders
- Allergies to Drugs and Chemicals

All in all the Greyhound breed of dog doesn’t have a lot of health problems and doesn’t need a lot of maintenance. One of the primary things to look out for is cold weather. Greyhounds have very thin coats and very thin skin and don’t tend to put on much weight, so if you live in a cooler area of the world then you need to make sure your Greyhound is well bundled up and if you go outside in the cold I suggest investing in a doggy sweater or doggy jacket.

Using a complete all-in-one doggy health supplement can easily prevent the primary Greyhound dog health problems listed above, especially bloating, thyroid problems and digestive problems. I personally use ProudDog Complete Wellness – a fantastic, easy-to-use dog supplement. Simply sprinkle the supplement on your Greyhound’s food once per day and the 24 vitamins and minerals will help boost joint health, immune system and skin and coat (very ideal for Greyhounds) as well as  help the digestive system which will really aid in your Greyhound’s inherent digestive problems.

Diet is the most important aspect of your dog’s health. When it comes to Greyhounds, you shouldn’t feed it one or two large meals a day. Instead, feed your pet three small portions a day, sprinkling a supplement like ProudDog Health Complete Wellness on one of those meals.
