What You Need to Know About Dog Arthritis Medicine and Treatments

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

We all get old at some point, and so do the pets we love and cherish. Taking proper care of our pets as they reach old age is important not only for prolonging their lives, but for preserving their comfort. A common disease affecting aging dogs is arthritis, a breakdown of cartilage leading to stiffness and discomfort. Caring well for a pet afflicted with this uncomfortable degenerative disease means learning as much as you can about treatments for it, often in the form of dog nutrients and dog supplements.

It’s best to combine several different approaches in treating your arthritic dog. Regular movement through exercise stimulates the release of fluids which lubricate the joints and keep them healthy. However, exercise must be combined with proper medicinal treatment in the form of medication, nutrients, and supplements.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), including Rymadil and Deramaxx, can be used to relieve pain, and don’t carry the side effects of corticosteroids, which are also effective. For pain relief, analgesic medications that are also used on humans can benefit your pet. Adequan injections, which contain protein-building components beneficial to the dog’s cartilage, are another treatment option.

Dog nutrients and dog supplements, also called nutraceuticals, are some of the easiest-to-use and most productive treatments for canine arthritis. Early use can even help prevent the development of the disease. Nutrients and supplements work to prevent the deterioration of cartilage, and to rebuild the broken-down cartilage that results in painful joints and stiffness. Some examples of dog nutrients and supplements that can be used are glucosamine and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Proper care, exercise and nutrition are important to every dog. A consistent treatment plan including proper daily care and the use of dog nutrients and supplements will keep your pet happy and healthy for a long time.
