Why Does Your Dog Have Diarrhea?
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009There are a variety of reasons that your dog may have diarrhea and most of the time it’s no cause for concern. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to decide whether or not you need to visit your local veterinarian.
- Dog Diarrhea — Puppies
The most common causes of diarrhea in dog puppies are viruses and parasites (worms). At this stage of your dog’s life, it’s important to keep in contact with your veterinarian. It’s normal for puppies to have a variety of worms, the best time to get your dog de-wormed is at 3 weeks old or soon after that age. Until your dog is dewormed it’s normal for diarrhea to occur. However, if your puppy is older than 3 weeks and has already been dewormed, then you should try and collect a stool sample so your veterinarian can check for Coccidia (Coccidiosis), Giardia, Trichomonas and other infections.
- Dog Diarrhea — Stress, Excitement or Anxiety
Dog diarrhea can actually be caused by extended stress, over excitement or anxiety on behalf of your dog. At the doggy daycare where I work I see a lot of cases of diarrhea. When dogs board with us for three days or more, they often times begin having separation anxiety. I notice that, when a dog is stressed, worked up, over excited and anxious, which can be characterized by spinning, barking constantly, breathing fast, foaming at the mouth and so on, they will often have diarrhea simply because they’re working themselves up into a tizzy.
Remember to observe your dog’s behavior. If your dog has diarrhea it could be caused by stress, excitment or anxiety.
- Dog Diarrhea — Change in Diet or Feeding Table Scraps
A sudden change in your dog’s diet can cause diarrhea. This can be as simple as changing your dog’s brand of food. Also, feeding your dog scraps from the table can cause upset stomach and diarrhea. I’m sure we all like to give our dog a little treat now and then (I like to give my dogs a bit of my bacon in the morning) but overdoing it will definitely cause diarrhea.
Remember, all dogs (like people) will have diarrhea from time to time and although you don’t need to worry about it, you do need to monitor it. If your dog has diarrhea or “loose stools” for over three days then you need to check in with your veterinarian. If your dog becomes lethargic and looses its appetite after recently having diarrhea then you also need to take your dog into the vet. It all comes down to observation.
Because Diarrhea is a direct result of diet and health, it’s important to feed your dog the correct food for its age. In addition, you need to give your dog a health supplement. Now, some people give their dogs one kind of supplement or another, but those dog supplements only treat one part of your dog’s health. What you need to do is use an all-in-one dog health supplement like Proud Dog Complete Wellness, which provides your dog with a healthy, boosted digestive system to prevent diarrhea as well as essential fatty acids, enhanced skin and coat, extra support for joint health, a boosted immune system and 24 other vitamins and minerals. I use it and my dog’s love it.
