We love our dogs and like any creature we love, we worry about them and want to protect them. We make sure they enjoy good dog nutrition and have all the needed dog supplements, but they are still at risk of one of the more prevalent canine afflictions — canine parvovirus.
Parvovirus has been around since about 1980. It spread across the globe with lightning speed. What this virus does is attack the lining of the digestive system in your dog. It can manifest itself in two ways: You will most likely see it as bloody diarrhea and possibly some vomiting, and your pet won’t have much energy. Parvovirus can also affect the lungs and hearts of our dogs, even causing congestive heart failure.
So this can be a serious condition, especially in puppies, since they have an immature immune system. It’s not an airborne virus, but it is stubborn. It’s transmitted normally through dog feces. Even if your dog stays in your yard, though, it’s possible to still get it. If any animal, including humans, steps in feces infected with parvovirus, that can be enough to bring it home. It can survive for months as well.
There is a vaccination for it, but it doesn’t always take in puppies as well as adult dogs, so it is recommended they be re-vaccinated according to a schedule your veterinarian will set. The vaccination is often included in your dog’s distemper shots. And the general health of your dog always helps, so good dog nutrition is important too.
If you think you may have brought parvovirus home somehow, or your dog suffers from it, the way to clean it up is clean up all the stools in your yard. Also, any surface or object you think might have been infected should be cleaned with a 1:30 ratio of chlorine bleach and water. Clean your pet’s water and food bowls, and wash any bedding in this same solution.
Parvovirus can be serious, but it’s avoidable through vaccinations and by vigilance in keeping your dog’s area clean. You can also help prevent the disease by helping your dog maintain a strong immune system. Feeding your dogs a daily supplement containing immune boosting vitamins well help them fight off diseases.
