Of course, another good reason to teach your dog tricks is for obedience training. Your relationship with your dog will be stronger if you know your dog will come when called, sit when needed, and obey your other commands.

A good way to train your dog is to start with a few simple, basic commands, such as “sit,” “stay,” and “down,” and then expand your dog’s training from there with more complex commands.

“Sit” is probably one of the easiest commands to teach your dog, so it’s a good place to start obedience training. Begin with your dog standing in front of you. Show him the treat in your hand, let him smell it, but don’t let him eat it. Knowing you have something yummy will help entice your dog to listen right off the bat. Give your dog the command, and then gently press down on his hips so he sits. Once he does, praise him generously and give him the treat.

Remember to be consistent in your commands. For example, if you use the word “down” to get your dog to lay down, don’t suddenly switch to “lay.” This will confuse your dog and work against your training.

And remember to continue to praise your dog when she does well. Even if you don’t give a treat every time, it’s important to give your dog loving attention so she knows when she’s doing something right. It will also help reinforce the training you’ve already given.
