The Holistic Approach to Dog Immunization Schedules

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Holistic veterinarians and regular veterinarians disagree about the amount of immunizations needed by dogs. The holistic veterinarians question that immunizations are as effective as they are advertised to be. Dog health is important for your dog so you try to do everything you are told by a vet. But if you fear that your dog is getting over immunized than you need to search out a holistic vet to get good dog care.

The holistic vet’s fear that vaccinations can is some cases hurt the dog. They feel that vaccinating should not be done when the immune system of the dog is not strong enough because of drugs, genetics or a prior disease or condition. Scheduling the vaccinations can be done at the wrong stage of development for the dog. A dog that is too sick, not well nourished, weak, or too young also should not be vaccinated for fear of doing harm.

One suggested holistic dog immunization schedule is:

Isolate a puppy until they have reached 22 weeks old. This means keep them away from other dogs other than the litter and their mother of course.

At 22 weeks the distemper vaccine can be given. Sometimes this in not available without the hepatitis vaccine though.

At 26 weeks the parvovirus shot can be administered.

Then when the dog reaches 30 weeks the rabies inoculation can be given.

Always follow your veterinarian’s advice after you have found one who’s school of thought best suits your own.
